A scrapyard owner has found a new way to get its trash to a city landfill.
It all started in 2014 when local artist, Josh Wilt, began to notice a huge increase in the number of trash bags that were being collected by his company, Scrapyard International.
Wilt says that over the next several years, his company had an average of about 250 bags per day, and he wanted to change that.
Wils company is called the Wilt Box scraper, and the idea is to combine two of the largest trash bins in the United States.
One is filled with recycled paper, and is located in a former auto parts warehouse in Washington, DC.
The other is filled mostly with scrap.
The two bins are connected by a chain, and when a scrap is picked up, the paper bag is pulled up by a cord, and then the scrap is dumped into the recycling bin.
The recycled paper is then composted, while the scrap that was picked up gets sent to a landfill.
Wilts company sells the boxes in New York City and Los Angeles, but also in Chicago and Dallas, where he is currently working on an expansion.
The company has partnered with several recyclers in the U.S. and Canada, including local businesses that sell the boxes and a scrap yard in New Jersey, according to Wilt.
It has become a success story, he says.
Wills scraper has now become the largest recyclable recycling business in the world, and it is estimated that there are now about 1,000 scrapyards in the US, according the company’s website.
“When I started scrapping in 2014, I wasn’t really thinking about it as a business,” he says of the company.
“It just sort of evolved into that.
People were starting to pick up and drop out of my business.”
Wilt has since been working with his partners in the recycling business to expand his scraper into a larger space.
The new Scrap Yard is the largest of its kind in the country, and Wilt says he plans to use the expanded space to grow the company to around 20 employees by the end of the year.
“It’s definitely been a very good fit,” he said.
“We’re really proud of it.”
